Om Yoga and U.N International Yoga Day!

This month there really is just too much in the June edition of Om Yoga, for me to just pick one favourite feature. If you're interested in taking your yoga practice further and considering teaching yoga teacher then I really recommend this month's magazine as it is the yoga teaching special edition.

As I'm very much a yoga beginner (sadly not yet at the Yoga teaching stage) the article that caught my attention this month was the one on Summer nutrition. This article is great as it containins lots of helpful healthy eating reminders such as the importance of staying hydrated, the benefits of iron rich leafy greens & vitamin C containing berries as well as the power of flowers in helping your health & well being. The feature has really helped me shift my focus back on to my diet as long working hours, stress & flucuating blood sugar levels have left me feeling exhausted so it's more important than ever for me to get my energy & health back on track through my diet & nutrition.

In other exciting yoga news - this year will see the first ever International Yoga Day, celebrated the world over on the summer solstice, Sunday 21st June.

Last year, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressed the United Nations General Assembly to get the day recognised, saying “Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day.” Recognising the impact yoga can have on the individual, and the world at large, he said that by changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, yoga can help us deal with climate change. “Yoga embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature.”

The resolution was co-sponsored by 175 members of the United Nations – a record number, proving the popularity of the ancient Indian discipline across the entire world.

After many attempts to have a day recognised globally, International Yoga Day will be celebrated across the global yoga community on the longest day of the year.

Alexandra Palace will be hosting the UK’s biggest event, with a free celebration in their beautiful grounds – a full day of yoga and meditation with some of the country’s leading teachers. So if you're free and in London tomorrow why not head down to Alexandra Palace (Alexandra Palace Way, London, N22 7AY) between 8am - 8pm tomorrow.
